Unit 1 Overview
Theme: Heroes and the Search for Justice
Unit Overview and Goal: Students will begin to use close reading strategies to extract meaning from a variety of texts and write analytical compositions investigating characters’ qualities, techniques of character development, and the effects and contributions of those character development techniques on the development of theme. By the end of this unit, students will be able to use textual evidence to support literal and inferential comprehension, interpret texts on deeper levels through annotation (diction, sensory images, and figurative language), communicate how an author develops a heroic character, and demonstrate an ability to use a variety of sentences and structures, interpret how authors illustrate justice and injustice through a carefully plotted sequence of events, and show how characters make choices.

> What can characters teach us about injustice?
>How do complex characters help us learn to fight injustice?
